True to form, Feliz had been getting a lot of mileage out of her trip downtown. Righteous indignation is usually good for about three days, tops. In the case of her recent arrest, Feliz was determined to get closer to a week, and I was pretty sure she’d make it. In another case, I might have been annoyed at her constant retelling to anyone who’d listen--and there’s always someone who didn’t get the word. This time I wasn’t. Not only did she have every right to be upset (and yes, I still felt a little guilty not going to see her), but I also got to see an excellent example of “what comes around goes around,” with this little bit of personal trauma. In order to answer just why she had been a suspect in the first attempt on my life, she had to admit her erstwhile spouse had bailed on the child support payments. A few of the neighboring shopkeepers took up a collection, and spent several minutes insisting before she would accept it. I couldn’t suppress a smile.

“Don’t say it,” she snapped at me when someone brought over a pot of jambalaya for her to take home to the kids.

“Say what?” I was maintaining an innocent expression with considerable difficulty.

“Anything that resembles, “I told you so.” Just don’t, okay?”

“I won’t,” I replied. “More coffee?”

“When we going to get an espresso machine in here?”

“The twelfth of never.” We’d had this conversation before. “They’re too expensive, there’s too much competition for the best latte in town and I only want a minimum amount of time spent on the coffee. We’re here for the books; the coffee’s from a bonus, and Café du Monde makes the best French Roast in town. We make any money today?”

“I took a reading of the register at lunch. We’re doing okay. Plus you got a commission earlier this afternoon, right?”

“I did. Seventy-five bucks plus the fee.” Which made an even hundred. I was pleased. The money some people would spend to get what they want. This was for an old Truman Capote book. Most of that would go in the register, but I’d have a percentage of it in my own pocket as well. Feliz insisted, since that was work that I did and she wouldn’t touch. “Did you remember to eat lunch? We can have something delivered. James had played the night before and was playing again tonight, so he was sleeping by daylight this week. It was about three and I was getting drowsy.

“I’m fine, honey. Go upstairs. Take a nap; get ready for your date. If it gets busy, I’ll call Flea, she asked for hours later this week.” I hoped she wasn’t having any trauma; I barely had enough time to deal with my own. Call it the price of a full life.
